Top 10 Creatures From MALAYSIAN MYTHOLOGY

Hey YouTube, Jim here! Welcome to Top10Archive! We’ve had so many requests for an Archive covering Malay folklore that we just had to see what all the fuss was about. While the southeast Asian Malays passed down incredible fables, epics, and bardic tales across generations, it was the more nefarious or fantastical stories we couldn’t help but latch onto. The following ten creatures, demons, and ghosts stalked Malay mythology and, if we’re any good at our jobs, the worst of them should soon be haunting your dreams.

  1. Being from Malaysia I often hear about The Javanese ghost Gundoruo from my place. It’s a large hairy beast with fangs. Some mythical creatures in Southeast Asia are kinda spread all over the place. They’re pretty similar like the Penanggal (Malaysia) and Mananggal (Filipino). Also the Pontianak (Malaysia & Indonesia)

  2. Great video. There are a couple of demons that even I, as a Malaysian didn’t know about, and most of them have variants in their background stories and/or traits. However, i just can’t help cringe and laugh a bit when you mispronounced some of their names. ^w^ ‘Hantu’ was correct. It literally means ‘ghost’ in Malay FYI.

‘Tinggi’ is pronounced ‘TING-GEE’, hard G, not the ‘j’.

Hantu Penanggal (you missed the L in the vid text) was close to perfect, it’s pronounced as ‘PE-NUNG-GULL’, as in seaGULL.

Langsuyar, or Langsuir (theres a few way of calling it), is pronounced as ‘LUNG-SOO-YAR’/’LUNG-SOO-YOR’ or ‘LUNG-SOO-AER’.

Orang Minyak was the one i really laughed hard. Minyak (oil) is pronounced as ‘MEE-NYUCK’, its the ‘nye’ sound, and the ‘UCK’ is the UCK in YUCK.

I’ve never heard of the A bao A qu, most likely because its origins are from India, as in a indian lore creature. Granted, Before Islam, Melaya was predominantly Hindu, so the lore might have been told by a several family lines. Not mine though.

Gedembai is also a creature ive never heard about, most probably because it is not a mainstream creature like most in the list. Im sure there’s a boatload more of malay lore and creatures ive never heard of.

For the orang minyak, some think that it’s a man who is trying to achieve immortality by making a contract with a djinn, and his task is to take the virginity of 9 women each night in a row to achieve his goal. im not sure what happens if he fails, but most stories end with the orang minyak being caught by the townspeople and burnt to death.
