But, in many places, you can have a baby and choose its name without any government involvement whatsoever. In some countries, however, officials are realizing that they sometimes need to intervene when parents go a little leftfield with their baby naming choices. So today, we’ve compiled a list of our picks of the top 10 illegal baby names around the world.

  1. The Icelandic name laws are in some ways incredibly stupid and in others not as bad as some people think.

    It’s terrible with foreigners, forcing immigrants to change their legal names. They’re still allowed to use their old names in day to day lives, it’s just about how it appears on paper and if it is understandable to natives.

    However, like the video says, you can submit a new name for an approval. New original and wacky names are approved all the time as long as they follow the rules mentioned in the video. For example, my half sister’s name is “Eyja”, which translates to “Island”
