Anne Boleyn was executed with a sword. It was the one mercy King Henry VIII afforded her. The sword, used by an expert Frenchman, was swift… whereas axes were notoriously gruesome and often took more than one blow to sever the head.
For the record, Ann Boleyn didn’t die by axe. Henry imported a French swordsman. The axe could take some time.
